So, both my roommate and the co-worker in the cube next to mine are pregnant. I have had numerous discussions lately about baby names. In particular, Fred and Steph (the roommates) would like me to help them make sure the name they pick sounds good in English. The don't want to tell me the name for some reason, though, so they're going to make a list with distractors.
Anyway, I was trying to think of tips to give them for kinds of names to avoid and I came up with the rule "If you have a girl, don't give her a name that is also an English word". It seems to me that these all either sound like old ladies or strippers. "Robin" is the only one I could think of that is acceptable. Look:
| Old Ladies | Strippers | June May Violet Hazel Lily Iris Rose Ruby Beryl Opal Pearl Prudence Constance Hope Faith Grace | April Tawny Heather Jasmine Amber Jewel Jade Crystal Cherry Candy Peaches Dawn Summer Autumn Angel Savannah |
Interestingly, stripper names are very different in the US and in France. Fred and Steph said the names that make them think of strippers are names like "Samantha", "Jessie".... Can you think of any names that are also English words that don't sound like old ladies or strippers?

I'm not usually a huge fan of superhero comics, but I do recommend two comic books that deal with worlds where superheroes exist: Powers and The Boys.
Powers is about two non-superpowered detectives who investigate the murders of superheroes. The art is great, though a little cartoonish, and the writing is also strong. The second volume, Roleplay, wrapped up a bit a anticlimactically, but otherwise I've really been enjoying what I've read so far.
The Boys follows a group of people who work for the CIA, keeping track of superheroes and bringing the ones who get out of control back in line (by blackmailing them, for example). I was prepared to not like this because Garth Ennis said it would "out-Preacher Preacher", and I was expecting it to just be an attempt to shock, but actually, it's quite good, though there are definitely some parts that are over the top.
On the otherhand, I didn't really care for Top Ten. I think what really made the difference for me was that Top Ten takes place in a world where almost everyone has some sort of superpower (at least within the city where the book is set), while The Boys and Powers are set in worlds that are pretty much like our own, but with the added fact of the existence of superheroes. The complexities of a world where superheroes and regular people co-exist are both very interesting (though strikingly different) in the two series.

What inspired my recent re-entry into the world of social networking? After several disasters last week with my ancient LG phone, I finally broke down and bought an iPhone. The app store is brilliant...if only Apple would hurry up and fix the problem with 3rd-party apps crashing all the time.

Dear marciacrossnude,
When I saw you listed corpus linguistics as an interest, I was intrigued. But when I saw that you also listed algorithms, being a slut, ganesha, and gay pride, I knew that I had found my life partner. You also list pregnant bellies, which you know I have a pathological fear of, you naughty, naughty...um...person. But how can I love someone whose only posts are ads for nude photos of a Desperate Housewives star?
You have broken my heart. Jim.
P.S. At least your fellow corpus-loving spam spitzersex taught me the term "jilling off". How could I never have heard that one before?
